Sinn 556I
This is a very good watch. I lusted after it for some time, and despite all the fuss I made around acquiring the Nomos, it being a German watch and all, this was in fact my first German-made watch. I bought it after I translated my grandfather’s Holocaust memoir into English. I feel like I ought to explain myself, but you can feel free to skip to the third paragraph.
I felt a connection to my grandfather after delving into his Holocaust experiences, and I wanted a memento of him. This was before I discovered that he left behind this watch (the reason I am willing to part with the 556). Incidentally, when I tried to “channel” Grandpa and consult with him for his opinion, he told me to buy a bag or a coat in his memory, not a watch. I chose a watch anyway. And I just wanted to make sure that Grandpa himself didn’t refrain from buying German-made products (my mother and uncles explained to me that, from his perspective, all Europeans were guilty, the Hungarians, for example, being no less antisemitic than the Germans). So that’s how I justified this choice, especially given that Sinn was founded in 1961.
So this 556 is an amazing everyday watch. With a water resistance rating of 200 meters and ample luminescence, it’s also a solid, borderline elegant watch, to the extent that it feels respectable enough for any situation. Truth is, it’s painfully minimalist, so much so that it feels wrong to add any more words about it.
Sold Out: It’s hard to believe this one is gone.
