Fisher’s Origins
My maternal grandfather, Jozeph Fisher (1928-1998), was what you would rightfully call “salt of the earth”. A Holocaust survivor who lost nearly his entire family to the Nazis and their helpers, he made his way to Israel, served in the Palmach, and worked for the nation’s water company, Mekorot, for the better part of his life.
My uncle, David Fisher, has already immortalized his memory with the documentary film Six Million and One, which traces the Holocaust memoir that grandpa wrote towards the end of his life, a memoir I had the honor of translating into English. Preceding the memoir, grandfather wrote a will, in which he told his children, regarding material matters, to divide his possessions equally unless they decided otherwise, “what little that is left, because I knew how to work and was very hardworking, but I did not know how to make money”.
This timepiece, a high-frequency electronic Omega Constellation, was gifted to my grandfather in 1977 by Mekorot to commemorate 25 years of service. At the time, quartz and electronic wristwatches were, surely, all the rage, but half a century later, the choice has been rendered all the more unfortunate by the fact that the movement has since suffered corrosion due to battery leakage. So, though wearing Grandpa Jozeph’s watch would be nice, it would likely require replacing the movement, and besides, the watch is rather fugly.
A final note: this timepiece currently resides in the custody of my uncle, Major (Res.) Dr. Adv. Gideon Fisher, who has graciously agreed to bestow the watch to the Mozifiheim collection, in due time.
